Self-regulation

One key objective of naiin is to strengthen self-regulation within Internet commerce in order to avoid over-regulation as well as political knee-jerk reactions. In the past, a great number of legal regulations relating to the Internet were introduced around the world, because service providers and companies did not respond to emerging negative developments quickly enough – or not at all – with concepts and measures of their own.

What transpired in most cases is that legal provisions don't take sufficient account of the nature of the Internet as a liberal medium, often don't have the desired effect, and can easily lead to disproportionate restrictions for the Internet community and Internet commerce. On the one hand, it is not desirable for over-regulation to impair the liberal character of the Internet. On the other hand, companies that generate sales with the aid of or through the Internet also have a special social responsibility to fulfil. It is up to them to take effective measures to ensure that their services or infrastructures aren't abused for criminal purposes.

Codes of practice, standards and measures

naiin supports Internet, telecommunications and mobile phone companies in matters of self-regulation worldwide and holds them accountable. It does so in the knowledge that self-regulation is going to be an important tool to create common international standards in the fight against and prevention of cybercrime, as well as in the areas of privacy and consumer protection.

As a self-regulation organization, naiin draws up voluntary declarations of commitment, codes of practice and standards in diverse areas, which service providers and companies commit themselves to complying with. naiin monitors compliance, while at the same time urging providers offering Internet, telecommunications and mobile communication services to adopt the self-regulation measures. In addition, naiin supports companies with a range of services to counter abuse of their services and infrastructures and prevent criminal activities.
