naiin has a multifaceted scope of activities. Five columns build the foundation of the organisation’s work: Information, Networking, the Complaint Registry, Strategy Development and Consulting.
Information
naiin uses effective public relations measures in order to inform the public in particular Internet users about the abuse of the Internet. The goal is to sensitise Internet users to damaging and illegal content and to enable them to recognise this type of content and report it.
Under the aspect of protection of children and young persons, a crucial element of naiin's public relations work is providing parents of under-aged Internet users with the knowledge (including information about filter software products) that they need in order to protect their children from material that is questionable in light of the law governing the protection of children and young persons and illegal content.
Public education takes place via press relations, information on the website, newsletters which can be requested by any interested party, internal and external cross-initiative workgroups, events, lectures and other activities.
Networking
naiin works with criminal prosecution and security authorities along with other responsible offices at urban, regional, national and international levels, with businesses specialising in the Internet and with like-minded initiatives, institutions, and organisations in order to develop and enact effective measures for battling damaging and illegal content.
At the same time, the mutually profitable exchange of information and experience between the institutions mentioned is guaranteed.
Complaint Registry
As of November, 2000, naiin has operated a complaint registry called netwatch. Internet users can file complaints on malicious and illegal content here.
Users can file complaints with the organisation’s complaint registry either via form on a specially designated portion of the homepage or directly at netwatch@naiin.org.
Objectionable content is first subjected to a legal review and, if necessary, measures are taken against it. In the course of this work, naiin is dependent upon intensive cooperation with the respective responsible criminal prosecution and security authorities.
naiin is focused on and aims to pursue offenders that place illegal content on the Internet and ensure that they receive just punishment.
Strategy Development
The development of a wide variety of strategies is another one of naiin’s core aims. Through its work with the complaint registry and its role as a contact partner for the Internet user community, naiin examines current trends involving Internet crime and attempts to develop and implement technical, social, and political countermeasures.
As such, naiin urges legislators to act; for example by demanding the tightening of laws or the introduction of statutory offences. Furthermore, naiin takes an active stance on political planning. The association reviews planning initiatives and determines their chances of success in the fight against cybercrime. At the same time, naiin does not restrict its activities to national borders.
Consulting
naiin offers not only its member businesses but all Internet users assistance in word and deed. naiin receives a large amount of enquiries related to the field of Internet crime each day by mail, fax, e-mail, and telephone. Whether handling questions on protection for children and young persons, IT security, dealing with illegal web content, or concrete evidence of crimes, naiin investigators are constantly confronted with a wider range of topics than any other comparable initiative in existence today.
Beyond this, naiin also supports its member businesses with its knowledge on combating cybercrime. The organisation functions as an interface between the Internet economy and the criminal prosecution authorities, searches company servers for illegal content, supports the implementation of security measures, and helps protect businesses from criminal abuse of their infrastructures.
