In August, 2000, the Internet was confronted with a massive increase in online crime. It rapidly became clear: The worldwide communications network appeals not only to upright citizens but also to criminal offenders who gravitate towards the Internet in heretofore undreamt of numbers.
At that time, extremists / terrorists and paedophilic criminals were the main groups that used the medium to spread their propaganda or their horrific image and video files. As we know today, this was just the beginning of a development that would soon spread to other areas of crime due to the rapid development of the Internet and the increasing social significance of the medium.
In the Internet economy, businesses soon recognised that their services, products and technical infrastructures were being exploited by those carrying out punishable offences. In order to counteract this abuse, they founded the no abuse in internet (naiin) initiative together with political and social leaders on August 18, 2000, under the auspices of the former CEO of the German television channel RTL, Prof. Dr. Helmut Thoma.
naiin was created in the knowledge that the fight against Internet crime requires a global social commitment that extends beyond financial borders. Only when all political, economic, and social forces join together with the criminal prosecution and security authorities can we succeed in putting a stop to the exploitation of this medium.
