Child & Youth protection

The Internet has dangers for children and young people. They are subjected to online sexual attacks by pedophiles or come across pornographic or extremist material or the glorification of violence. Inexperience often leads them to give personal data, fall into subscription traps or become victims of cyber-bullying.

Parental supervision is generally entirely absent and cannot be substituted by legal or technical measures. And yet parents would provide the most effective protection for the youngest Internet users against contents and activities on the Internet that are dangerous for young people as well as illegal.

However, service providers are also expected to structure their services in a way that effectively protects young people and does not, for instance, allow the distribution of material dangerous for young people.

Sensitization, cooperation with schools and world-wide child protection standards

naiin is pursuing different approaches to strengthen child protection on the Internet - and for mobile phones as well. In addition to proactive measures such as targeted action against material on the world wide web that is dangerous for young people, naiin works to sensitize parents about the dangers that their children are exposed to on the Internet.

But naiin also address the kids and teenagers directly with information campaigns to alert them to the dangers on the Internet - naturally in an appropriate way for the age groups involved. naiin works intensively in this with school authorities and educational facilities. Education about responsible use of the Internet enables young people to assess dangers correctly.

naiin, whose official responsibilities include protection of young people, supports service providers in the areas of the Internet, telecommunications and mobile telephony to take account of the requirements for child and youth protection. naiin also works, in its capacity as an international self-regulatory organization, towards the achievement of unified global standards for the protection of young people. naiin also conducts dialogues for this purpose with policy makers in a very wide variety of countries.
