Phishing is a combination of the words "password" and "fishing". It refers to the "fishing" of a password or other particularly confidential data from Internet users. Examples include complete registration information (such as user name and password), personal data (such as name, postal address and date of birth) and account and credit card details.
Phishing is also known as a method of identity theft, which is usually followed by other actions. The acquired data can be used to log into protected online areas, transfer money to other accounts, or make purchases with the credit card information. The acquired data may themselves be sold as well - often several times. Furthermore, the identity of innocent users may be misused for further criminal activity, enabling the perpetrator to conceal his identity behind that of the user.
Phishing acquires data by deception of the rightful user, usually by email. The user is unaware as he enters the data that they are being passed to a "phisher", and believes that they are being sent to the site which is being simulated, such as the server of a bank.
Creating awareness of dangers, deleting phishing sites, identifying the perpetrators
An important aspect of naiin's work is to inform and sensitize users about problems such as "phishing". Anyone who is aware of the risk of phishing and takes precautions can minimize the risk of being a victim of identity theft.
However, since experience shows that even experts are occasionally taken in by such methods, naiin also combats phishing directly. naiin works to uncover phishing campaigns swiftly, delete the phishing websites in collaboration with the Internet service providers as quickly as possible, and identify the individuals responsible.
