The days when racists and right-wing extremists met up in the back rooms of dingy pubs or bars to plan their hate campaigns and actions against those who thought or looked different are long gone. Racists have long since come to look respectable - and meanwhile thrive and promote themselves inconspicuously on the Internet, abusing social networks and running their own websites to propagate their racist agendas and to organize xenophobic activities.
Aiming to recruit new young members, their online target is children and young people. These use the Internet intensively, are in the process of finding their place in society and are particularly susceptible to the influence of racists - who use propaganda to offer them what superficially seems to be a strong sense of identity and belonging.
However, racist groups and individuals do not use the Internet only for attracting new members and supporters; they also make great efforts to broadcast their racist ideas rapidly and widely among the online community in the form of music and films - while remaining as anonymous as possible.
To maintain the Internet as a medium for international understanding
Through a targeted international action against racist propaganda on the Internet, naiin has made, and continues to make, an important contribution towards preserving the Internet as a medium for international understanding. On the one hand, naiin succeeds in having inhuman hate propaganda deleted from the Internet when, by attacking human rights and the freedoms of other people through incitement of racial hatred, it has stepped far beyond the limits of freedom of speech. On the other hand, naiin advises Internet service and solution providers - such as social networks, domain, web hosting, share hosting and file sharing services - how they can act, both legally and technically, against the propagation of racist hatred through their infrastructures.
In addition, naiin carries out research in this area and closely monitors racist developments on the Internet and the online activities of individual groups around the world. Through educational and publicity initiatives, naiin also seeks to inform children, young people, parents and society at large about racist activities on the world wide web and the dangers associated with them.
